RAKU BY COLIN WOODCOCK

The process of raku involves coating once-fired ceramics with low-fired glazes, heating them in a kiln until white hot, removing them while the glaze is still molten and setting them into a container of combustible material such as grass, sawdust, paper or seaweed. The resulting fire starves the clay and glaze of oxygen creating spectacular hues of copper, gold, silver and turquoise.

This exposure to the smoke and flame gives raku its crackled glazes, smoky tones and strong colours. These pots represent a sample of our work.
