The process of raku involves coating once-fired ceramics with low-fired glazes, heating them in a kiln until white hot, removing them while the glaze is still molten and setting them into a container of combustible material such as grass, sawdust, paper or seaweed. The resulting fire starves the clay and glaze of oxygen creating spectacular hues of copper, gold, silver and turquoise. |
